Lake Village at Cane Bay: A Proposed 5,500-Home Expansion, Explained

One of the largest developments ever proposed in Berkeley County is working its way through the approval process, and if you live anywhere near Cane Bay, it is worth understanding.

It is called Lake Village at Cane Bay: a proposed expansion of roughly 2,000 acres with up to 5,500 homes along Highway 17A, along with commercial and civic space.

Here is where it stands right now:

• The county Planning Commission recommended approval on a 4 to 2 vote on June 23.
• The Land Use Committee is scheduled to take it up on July 13.
• From there, it still needs three separate County Council readings before it could be approved.

A project of this scale touches everything that makes a place feel like home: traffic on 17A, school capacity, and the pace of growth in a corridor that is already one of the fastest-growing in the state. Neighbors have strong and differing opinions, and that is understandable.
