Lake Village at Cane Bay Goes Before County Council: What to Watch

Berkeley County Council is set to take its first full vote on one of the largest developments ever proposed in the county: Lake Village at Cane Bay.

If you have not been following it, here is the short version. Lake Village is a proposed roughly 2,000-acre, up to 5,500-home expansion tied to the Cane Bay area along Highway 17A. It would add homes, commercial space, and civic sites, and it has drawn strong feelings on both sides, from neighbors worried about traffic and growth to supporters who point to housing demand.

A couple of things to watch:

• Council Chairman Obie has asked that the affordable housing component be raised to 250 units, up from the 50 micro-units in the earlier plan.
• This is only the first of three required council readings. Even if it advances, the final reading is currently on track for September 28.

I am not here to tell you whether this is good or bad for the area; reasonable neighbors land on both sides.
