Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital Doubles in Size: What the Expansion Means for Lowcountry Families

If you have driven US-176 lately, you have watched the cranes come down at 100 Callen Boulevard. Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital, right next to Carnes Crossroads, celebrated the completion of a major expansion on June 10, and it is a genuinely big deal for anyone living in this corner of the Lowcountry.

Here is what the project delivered:

  • Twice the beds, from 50 to 100 inpatient beds.
  • More than 300,000 square feet of new and renovated space.
  • About 350 new healthcare jobs for the area.
  • New specialty care in neurology, cardiology, and orthopedics, so more families can get that care close to home instead of driving into Charleston.
  • A growing emergency room, expanding from 14 to 35 beds. It is already the busiest ER in the Roper St. Francis system.

A little context on why this matters so much here: when Roper St. Francis Berkeley opened in 2019, it was the first full-service hospital Berkeley County had seen in 45 years. For a county growing this fast, that was overdue, and this expansion is the system keeping pace with how many families now call Cane Bay, Nexton, Carnes Crossroads, and Moncks Corner home.

Why am I writing about a hospital on a real estate blog? Because healthcare access is one of the quiet things that makes an area livable, and it is one of the first questions relocating families ask me. When you are weighing a move to the Berkeley County side of Summerville, knowing there is a full-service hospital with a real ER and specialty care minutes away is the kind of detail that helps a house feel like home.

If you are buying, selling, or relocating in the corridor and want the honest lay of the land, that is exactly what I love talking through. Just call Jess.
